I Am Important

Are you impressed?
I recently got a letter in the mail.

From an association I no longer belong to.
Sent by the volunteer in charge of membership.
Her name was all over it.

The letter was basically about her.

She used “me,” “my” or “I” six times.
In a four-paragraph letter.
With four mentions in the first paragraph alone.

The letter read like [...]

It Was a Promise Based on Nothing

   Disappointing.
Got a letter from a credit card company.

Usually I can tell solicitations.
Just zip them.
Don’t think twice.

This one was different.

The envelope was puffy.
Could there be something fun in there?
I couldn’t figure it out by squeezing.

Opened the envelope.

Peeked inside.
Found a piece of bubble wrap.
What the heck?

My expectation of cool was greeted by bubble wrap.

I was insulted.
Felt [...]

When Smoke Gets In Your Towels

Yuck!
I’m staying in a lovely hotel.

On a non-smoking floor.
In a room with a great bed.
And smoky towels.

I noticed the first time I walked past the bathroom.

I could smell smoke - not too strong.
Wondered if I was being haunted by a ghost?
Or the hotel was burning down?

I knew it wasn’t a ghost.

Only my grandfathers smoked.
And [...]

Technology Darn Near Caught Me with My Pants Down!

   ARGH!
I’m wondering if it’s something to do with me having the flu?

Technology is usually really good to me.
Except when I blew up three microphones during a 30-minute keynote in Lousiana at a Chamber of Commerce Annual Breakfast Meeting.
(I was featured on the news three times that day!)

Today technology is driving me nuts.

I tried to [...]

From Bad Hair Day to Cover Girl

   Whew!
I spoke Tuesday in Chicago for Association Forum.

Teaching association execs how to be Lazy Leaders.
Had an early start.
Went live at 8:30 AM.

I hopped in the shower to get ready.

Popped out and discovered a mistake.
I did not pack a brush or comb.
My hair was short - I should be okay.

I piled extra heat-activated product on [...]

Forget the Heart - Kill Your Chapter

Results guaranteed.
I’ve seen the advice  twice in the last 24 hours.

Forget members.
Think consumers.
It’s the new way.

Seriously?

That concept floated about ten years ago.
Didn’t work then.
Won’t work now.

Here’s the challenge…

People want to belong to something cool.
Dues are not out of style.
Belonging is not just for losers.

If you are struggling, the experience you offer is a member [...]

Who Moved My Soap?

Darn maid!
I have special face soap.

Pink with black seeds in it.
Moisturizes as it exfoliates.
Hand-made in Tennessee.

As I stepped in the shower yesterday morning, I noticed it was missing.

What the heck?
I left it out to dry.
Why would the maid throw it away?

I grumbled through my shower…

Denver has like no humidity.
My face is going to crack [...]

You Can’t Have It Both Ways

Seriously.
A few weeks ago I joined an association.

A professional association.
Since then I’ve felt sort of afloat.
And not quite part of the group yet.

Today I got an email.

From the association leader.
Welcoming me.
At least that’s what I thought - until I read it.

The greeting was off-putting.

She was too busy traveling.
To personally call me.
So she sent me [...]
