My heart sunk.
James picked me up at the airport late last night.
I had been going for five days.
Facilitated ADA’s Leadership Institute.
Very tired and dreaming of bed.
“I’ve got some bad news…”
I clenched - who died or was sick?
Mom? Dad? Raindrop?
Whew! All were alive.
Then James told me Raindrop was attacked by another dog on Saturday.
The [...]

I totally rejected him.
Last night James was at a meeting.
I got in my extreme comfy clothes.
(Not for public viewing)
And settled in to read a great book.
I saw the salesman approach.
He tried to ring the doorbell.
(It doesn’t work - on purpose.)
He wouldn’t give up.
He looked in the window of our front room.
Saw me immersed in [...]

Not fair!
It started a few days ago.
I could tell they were near.
But I didn’t get to investigate.
Dad kept me busy.
Today I got my chance.
First I helped Dad mow the yard.
Then we barbequed dinner together.
Which meant I got to explore the backyard.
Dad left me alone for a few minutes.
He took the meat in the house.
It was all the [...]

And shook with fear.
Raindrop didn’t understand what was going on.
One minute I was screaming loudly.
The next had tears streaming.
Then moaning again.
My focus was on Michigan State losing the NCAA Championship game.
Her focus was on me.
What was wrong with the alpha dog?
Raindrop didn’t know what to do.
She ran to her “safe spot” near the kitchen.
Wouldn’t come out [...]

Said the kick to my gut.
James leaves for swim practice most mornings at 5:30 AM.
The alarms start at 5 AM.
He’s out of the house soon after.
I usually prefer to sleep a bit later.
On Monday, I announced I was going to start getting up earlier.
I can get a lot done in the morning quiet.
It’s light out [...]

For she is She.
Raindrop is a pretty intelligent girl.
She knows her name.
She knows we sometimes call her “the dog.”
Until this weekend, we didn’t realize she also knew about “She” too.
James and I were talking and used “she” in a sentence.
I noticed Raindrop’s ears perking up.
She heard she again.
Began wagging her tail.
We were talking about a [...]

And irresistible options.
It’s time for Raindrop to learn a new trick.
She has memorized my normal requests.
She speaks before I ask.
And drops into a down position.
I want to teach her how to shake.
I tell her to sit.
I tap her paw and say shake.
She doesn’t listen.
Raindrop wants to get to the treats faster.
Not learn new tricks.
When I ask [...]

But Mom and Dad saved me.
Raindrop here - and alive.
This morning, Mom and Dad were ignoring me.
They ate breakfast.
Started talking about goals for 2009.
How boring!
I decided to find something more fun to do.
And hit the jackpot.
You’ll never believe what I found.
A bag of Zingerman’s brownies!
Life was good!
Two pounds of pure, high-quality chocolate.
Balanced with the [...]
