I Woke to the Rumbling

Of a rain storm.

Sunday was supposed to be the big day.

  • Running my first 5K.
  • Trained for weeks to get ready.
  • Dreams crushed last week by a cracked toe.

Never thought about rain.

  • Did my training on a track in the gym.
  • Was going to do four runs outside before the race.
  • To get used to pounding on cement.

Not sure I would have run that morning.

  • Was it safe to run in a storm?
  • Would my contacts stay in my eyes?
  • Did runners wear raincoats?

Wow – I wasn’t really prepared for the race.

  • My training had focused on me
  • Ignored the big picture of what could be.
  • No plans for potential challenges.

What an eye-opener!

Makes me think of chapter leaders…how do you keep your eye on the big picture as you do your volunteer work?

  1. Great lessons on preparing, and keeping your eye on the big picture! But don’t despair too much – you trained for weeks? Think of all the benefits of those weeks of good physical activity! As you’ve also taught us: focus on movement, so while your toe may require that movement to be gradual for a little while, you can look forward to your next 5K oh-so-much smarter!

  2. Thanks for the support and words of wisdom Barb. You are right. I really indulged my drama queen for a few days after cracking my toe. Not my proudest moments – but they are what they are.

I’m now planning for full recovery and hoping my next first 5K I run will be on the 4th of July!
