I Thought They Wanted ME!
Posted on March 15th, 2012 by Cynthia D'Amour
Today I got a message on LinkedIn.
- From someone I didn’t know.
- Inviting me an upcoming chapter meeting.
- Offering to get me in at the member price.
I first read the invite on my phone.
- I was intrigued.
- It was a chapter I considered exploring in the past.
- How nice of this person to ask me!
Then I got on my computer…
- Saw the rest of the story.
- This wasn’t a personal message to me.
- It was a cattle call of names.
My excitement fizzled.
- The program looked just okay.
- Located on the other side of Metro Detroit.
- A two-hour drive during rush hour.
If a personal invite, maybe I’d go – but as a generic outreach, not worth attending.
Makes me think of chapter leaders…do you personally reach out to potential guests?

Cynthia -
Great post. I’ve actually changed associations and work with one that has chapters so your posts and program are even more relevant for me than they were when I first met you last year.
Congrats on all you’ve accomplished. Keep in touch!

Hi Matt!
Congrats on the new job. Glad to be even more relevant!
Will I see you at Great Ideas?
Cynthia
Cynthia,
A great reminder that networking and inviting is a person-to-person activity. Sometimes in the connected world this is forgotten. I am certainly guilty.
Here is my personal invitation to you. As President of MSED I invite you to join us on 3/2 for “Women Who are Setting a New Standard in Sales & Marketing.” (www.msed.org).
I hope you will consider joining us,
Tom
Thanks for the invite Tom. Unfortunately I will be flying across the country that day and unable to join you.
Hope you have a great meeting!
Cynthia
