Robot Call Your Own Number
Posted on October 20th, 2009 by Cynthia D'Amour
Got a call this afternoon.
- From an association.
- Urging me to attend a conference.
- Early bird deal running out.
This how they use my dues?
- I’ve already gotten 57 emails.
- Seen the promos on Facebook.
- And ads in the magazine.
I want my dues to work for me.
- Not pay a robot to harass me.
- Even if the recording was the national president.
- I was underwhelmed.
Did the auto-calls produce results?
- I wonder…
- I won’t pick up next time.
- Would you?
Makes me think about chapter leaders…do you know the most effective strategy for inspiring your members to action?

Cynthia, I’ve had very similar reactions to what you describe with Robo-calls. A couple months ago, I was part of a discussion group on attendance building tactics and kind of changed my tune.
One event organizer talked about how they have used robo call services successfully. The calls were made to confirmed registrants. They made the call much more personal w/ a call to action that included their personal contact info. Their call goal was to improve the no show rate for a major tradeshow. After hearing an example of the message, tone and offer of assistance it really clicked for me. Robo calls can work, but they need to come across as one to one vs. one to many.
A good service provider should be able to help consult clients on how to do this and get positive results. I received a robo call yesterday from a company that provides this service for the tradeshow industry. They claim they have helped increase attendance by as much as 15%. I;m thinking that if you do this as a desparation move to drive last minute registrations, it’s more likely to fail.

Hi Dave!
Thanks for the insider’s scoop to the calls. I’ve learned the hard way to not totally dish an approach until I see the results. You never know what will work for the bulk of folks.
That said, I’m guessing it’s more effective - as long as lots of people don’t do it.
We are getting one or two of these calls almost daily right now. They’ve moved from novelty to annoying for us.
Thanks for sharing the rest of the story! Cynthia
