Have You Read a Book Lately?

   Not all have.

Yesterday James and I heard David Alan Grier (DAG) talk.

DAG read a few selections.

  • Made me laugh and cry.
  • Man does he have the voice.
  • Wish he would read to me every night.

DAG took questions from the audience.

  • The line quickly formed.
  • Many eager to interact with the famous local son.
  • Some childhood friends.

The first question shocked me.

  • A nice-looking woman asked DAG if his book was on audio.
  • She shared she hadn’t read a book in several years.
  • Several in the room agreed.

Ann Arbor is a very educated area.

  • Most in the room looked like professionals.
  • No books in several years confounded me.
  • How could this be?

I easily read 150+ books/year.

  • I have most of my life.
  • Books unleash the wonders of the world for me.
  • (Plus we were meeting in the library!)

I’ve written seven books including The Lazy Leader’s Guide to Outrageous Results.

  • All of my books are fast, easy reads.
  • After yesterday’s comment I wonder if I’m doing enough.
  • Maybe I need alternative vehicles to deliver the same information?

The timing is perfect.

  • We are in the midst of reviewing our 2010 strategic plan.
  • How many more can I help next year?
  • Especially if I stretch how I’ve always done it?

Makes me think of chapter leaders…Do you need to shake up how you deliver your chapter experience to reach people different from you?

  1. Hi Cynthia -

Like you, I am an avid book reader - so much that I was given an electonic book reader, a Kindle (www.amazon.com) for my birthday this year, by my family.

As an IT professional, I embrace new technologies and totally love my Kindle. My only regret is that I cannot get all the books I want to read, digitally; including anything by Cynthia D’Amour.

In addition to books, I receive newspapers, blogs, and NEWSLETTERS(!). I can send myself any PDF document I want to have on-hand at any given moment.

I also discovered podcasts last year and now have over 1300 “pods” on my MP3 player, which I listen to while my hands do busy work and my head has time to listen.

This are excellent venues to disseminate static (electoriic book readers) and/or dynamic (podcasts) information. And while electronic book readers are still pricey, they will come down as all tech does; and podcasts are typically free!

  2. Great to hear from you Lori. You’ve got a lot of good ideas - as usual!

    Cynthia

  3. [...] Cynthia D’Amour wants to know if you’ve read a book lately. She attended an event at a library in Ann Arbor, Mich. and many other attendees asked about audio [...]

  4. I was at you seminar in Marin, CA this month and I bought your whole package because it included CD’s. I am very busy as we all are and I love to listen to books on CD. I can listen to whatever I want to while doing mundane and boring things that need to be done like scrubbing the toilet and washing the dishes. My family is getting used to seeing me with headphones in my ears. I can always pause the CD to have a conversation with my family so it is better than going to a seminar. I am hoping to get an MP3 player soon so I can download books and lectures.
So if you are planning for next year it would be great to see your books available on audio like DAG.

  5. Hi Claudia!

Thanks for giving me an insight into how you learn. We are working on recording of Lazy Leader book. Stay tuned!

    Cynthia

  6. We should really talk about Emergenetics and how different personality preference approach learning differently!

In 2010 let’s commit to talking via phone….or event better…Skype Video Call to share knowledge on topics like this!

    All the best!

  7. I would love to do that Nora! Will be fun to compare Emergenetics with what I know from doing a lot of grad work in teaching methodoloy and super accelerated learning!

    Let’s do it!
