The Mailman Strikes Again
Posted on July 7th, 2009 by Cynthia D'Amour
Today the mailman brought me another story to share.
- This time the culprit is a newsletter.
- From a program I was involved in a few years ago.
- And have not heard from since.
The newsletter itself is not bad.
- A single, double-sided piece of paper.
- It’s a quick read.
- And includes coupons.
However, I have no idea what it talks about.
- Since I left they added an “Encore” program.
- I’m guessing it’s an alumni program.
- But I’m not sure.
The newsletter keeps me in the dark.
- There’s no definition of the program.
- No link for getting more information.
- No friendly name for me to call.
85% of newsletter talks about the Encore program.
- I can’t appreciate what I don’t understand.
- Which means it’s not relevant to me.
- Doubt I’ll open the envelope next time it comes.
Another wasted marketing effort.
Makes me think of chapter leaders…do you leave some members clueless and disengaged because you communicate in code?

You make a really awesome point Cynthia.
A lot of what I do can be considered code to a lot of people, the vocabulary I use on a daily basis is not one that everyone understands. This is a really great reminder to me to keep stepping back and seeing how I can “decode” what members (and potential members) come in contact with, yet still teach them at the same time.
Thanks for making me think, you’re really good at that!
Thanks Lynn. It’s so easy to get caught up in the code we use everyday and forget others may be left in the dark.
