They Trained Me to Have Control

   And then took it away.

I like checking myself in when I fly.

  • I always inspect the seating chart.
  • And move to a better place when I can.
  • Plus I feel in control.

This week in Albuquerque, they took the control away from me.

  • I walked up to the kiosk ready to check in.
  • And was greeted by a bossy lady who insisted on doing the deed.
  • Even though I was standing right in front of the computer.

The experience wasn’t fun.

  • She couldn’t spell my name.
  • Gave me someone else’s boarding pass.
  • And told me I was not allowed to be upgraded.

As a Gold Elite flyer I felt truly treasured.

  • NOT!
  • I knew I was already upgraded to first class for the first leg.
  • Wanted to be put on the upgrade list for second leg.

The woman flustered when I refused the incorrect boarding pass.

  • “But Francine you’ve got to take this!” she argued.
  • My grumpiness at having to leave so early got worse.

A supervisor stepped in when he observed our stalemate.

  • Apologized profusely.
  • Set me for upgrade.
  • And gave me the appropriate boarding pass.

I love good service as much as the next person.

  • But they missed the boat that morning.
  • Just because someone was bored.
  • Plus the “help” took twice as long as if I had done it myself.

There were better ways to enhance the value of my experience.

Makes me think of chapter leaders…are you using volunteer hours in ways that maximize value for members?
