Made by a 16 year old kid.
James spent this weekend at the Michigan Masters State Meet.
Adult swimmers of all ages competed.
It was a celebration of fun and sport.
The local high school swim team helped out.
James is a distance swimmer.
He also loves to do butterfly stroke.
He competes in long races doing butterfly.
(Most people swim freestyle.)
Friday night, [...]

Are you?
Traditionally I’m not a big potato fan.
I don’t like the texture.
The taste is too bland.
I rarely order them.
Until I learned some potatoes are special.
At Zingerman’s Roadhouse.
On a dare from James.
And the insistence of our server.
The chef brings in produce from his farm.
Including potatoes.
Which were supposedly amazing.
And different from anything I’d ever had.
I was skeptical [...]

What would you do?
(Yesterday I wrote about me. Today it’s all about you.)
Imagine opening your arms wide…
Creating meaningful value for lots of members.
By letting them volunteer just a little bit.
In ways that get them excited.
The Lazy Leader’s Guide to Outrageous Results calls those folks 10% volunteers.
They aren’t martyrs who give 110%
And yet they can [...]

Here is how I would volunteer.
Last month, Peggy Hoffman started a conversation about volunteering with various association bloggers.
The focus: ad hoc or one-time volunteer experiences.
The challenge: to provide five examples.
Lynn Morton asked me to share my favorites.
Here are five one-time volunteer experiences I have enjoyed.
All of them are real.
I would do any of them again.
They all [...]

And still they called.
This afternoon I got a renewal phone call from an association I thought I no longer belonged to.
My benefits were turned off two weeks ago.
So said the association president.
And I blogged about it.
Today it seems they care - and I still belong.
Who knew?
Not me.
But caller insisted I had been a member for [...]

This Blog!
Today is the official birthday of my blog.
I started writing two years ago.
Felt like I was taking on the world.
And not totally sure what I was doing.
It took me a few posts to get my rhythm.
Had lots of advice from well-meaning folks.
They wanted me to play by their rules.
I felt best when I discovered [...]

Said the kick to my gut.
James leaves for swim practice most mornings at 5:30 AM.
The alarms start at 5 AM.
He’s out of the house soon after.
I usually prefer to sleep a bit later.
On Monday, I announced I was going to start getting up earlier.
I can get a lot done in the morning quiet.
It’s light out [...]

At IKEA.
I got bombarded with the promos yesterday.
Mail.
E-mail.
(I was impressed they all hit the same day.)
This weekend, IKEA is bribing folks with free food.
For a limited time each morning this weekend.
You too can eat breakfast for free.
They show eggs, bacon and hash browns in the photos.
The offer caught my eye.
And looked pretty good too.
Of course, [...]
