The House is Too Quiet…

Sweet Raindrop   I miss my dog.

Yesterday we took Raindrop for her annual 4th of July visit with my folks.

She’ll be there almost ten days.

  • Last night I heard 20 separate fireworks episodes in our neighborhood.
  • If Raindrop was here, we would both have needed valium.
  • (Her for the noise - and me for having to watch her fear.)

Today our house is way too quiet.

  • Sure James is here.
  • The neighbors are mowing.
  • But, I don’t have my work buddy hanging with me.

Counting Crows’ “Big Yellow Taxi” song runs through my head…

“Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

It’s going to be a long ten days without Raindrop around.

Makes me think of chapter leaders…how do you recogonize the value individual members bring to your chapter - before it’s too late?

  1. Hey, “Big Yellow Taxi” is by Joni Mitchell. Whoops! Showing my age.

  2. Ahhh David, thanks for keeping me on the straight path. My husband agrees I should have known Joni Mitchell.

I looked at her video on You Tube and still like Counting Crows’ video better.

Either way, it’s a great song.

Sort of interesting how something as simple as a well-known song may mean different things to different people.

Can make communicating quite the adventure!

  3. Hi Cynthia -
I’m an R.N. and I do holistic techniques on humans and animals.
I just read the article about Raindrop and his fear of fireworks.
I’ve worked on many animals who are afraid of loud noises, thunderstorms, fireworks, etc. - - with great success and NO drugs.
If you’d like more info, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Patrice

  4. Hi Patrice!

I would love to hear any suggestions you have.

We’ve had thunderstorms several times a week and James has been working on desensitizing her to them by playing with her during the loud times. He’s been doing this consistently and Raindrop seems less anxious than she used to be.

The fireworks are harder because we don’t know when they will hit and a few seconds of bomming can set off a whole bunch of fear reactions.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

  5. Sorry to hear about Raindrop’s troubles with fireworks…

That being said, as much as I like Counting Crows…

LOL, C’mon, girlfriend, this was JONI MITCHELL’s anthem, as timely today as it was when she first sang it loud decades ago.

Joni’s the goddess, and no sir, I did not grow up with her–after all she didn’t have MTV available to her when her song became a hit…

  6. Okay Caveman. I got the message.

You actually inspired me to share a similar story in my blog yesterday did you see it? It was about reinventing sex.

Thanks as always for your feedback.

    Cynthia
