Wrapping the First-Timer Story…

Cynthia Sees the Light    Reflections from Ann Arbor.

I spent three full days at an annual conference as a first-timer.

  • It was an awkward experience at times.
  • It was an eye-opener.
  • I’m glad I did it.

At times, I wondered if I really was able to think as a first-timer.

  • I work so much with associations helping them get members more involved.
  • I spent the last day interviewing other first-timers at the event to see how my impressions compared.

I was rather spot on….

  • Most did not feel prepared going in to the event.
  • They heard the message to get involved several times while in Atlanta and yet could not find an opening for future involvement.
  • While the content was great, many still left the meeting feeling frustrated in their relationship with the organization.

On a positive note, the people-mover volunteers throughout the convention center were delightful.

  • More than 150 people involved.
  • Always smiling.
  • Made us feel welcome.

My big take-away…Little things make a difference in converting first timers into raving fans.

  • Pre-meeting communication including tips for first timers.
  • A volunteer sign up form if involvement is going to be stressed every day.
  • Something onsite to help newbies meet each other.

Simple strategies can have big impact whether in place - or missing.

Makes me think of chapter leaders…what are the little things you do to increase value for first timers?
