Woman Wins Indy 500!
That’s the vision of Lyn St. James who was presented the Professional Achievement Award tonight by the Women’s Automotive Association International.
(My California-based friend Jody DeVere of AskPatty.com invited me to attend the awards dinner tonight since it was taking place in Metro Detroit -she’s the blonde in the photo).
Lyn St. James is a fascinting woman. She…
- Completed her first Indy 500 at age 45.
- Came in 11th place.
- Was named Rookie of the Year.
In 1993, Lyn created a driver development program to teach young women (including Danica Patrick) the inside scoop of competitive driving.
Lyn continues to race and is an advocate for encouraging more women to get into the sport.
She is convinced if enough women are groomed to race in the Indy 500, a woman will eventually win…
(Of course, Lyn hopes to be the first to take home the honor!)
Made me think of chapter leaders…how do you groom the future leaders to drive your chapter to success?

Furthermore - I would love to see a woman anywoman just race a fulltime ride in the NASCAR Nextel Cup series.
It’s all about getting a female race car driver the BIG sponsorship deals, the best equipment, onto an experienced team with a top flight pit crew, wheeltime and of course a talented and ambitious driver.

Jody, thanks for having me at your special night! I loved Lyn’s message - and you drive home the path it’s going to take to get there.
Chapter leaders need to find also create similar maps to provide resources and experiences for grooming their future leaders.
