Help Comes in Many Flavors

The Candy KioskHe looked like a thug.

You know… the angry young man you wouldn’t want to meet alone in an alley at night.

I was at the mall and saw a candy kiosk in the center of the aisle. It had three shelves of various treats in bubblegum-type dispensers.

A young mother approached the candy machines and told her son they would both have a treat.

The young boy debated for what seemed an eternity - should he get the pretty red chewing gum or some funny-looking gummy candies???

Mom got tired of waiting. She grabbed a quarter out of her purse, bought a gumball and popped it in her mouth.

Finally the child had made his decision - but there was a problem…

It seems Mom only had one quarter - and she already used it!

The young boy started to throw a tantrum as Mom anxiously shook her purse hoping for a quarter to miraculously appear.

Suddenly out of nowhere, the young thug rushed toward the mother and child.

(An older couple clenched with fear as he passed on the way to the candy kiosk.)

The so-called thug got down on one knee, talked to the young boy about being a man - and bought him the candy he wanted.

The young boy glowed in his attention - and Mom gushed with thanks.

Made me think of chapter leaders…how do you keep prejudices you may have in check when it comes to making members who are different from you feel welcome in your chapter?
