Readers Beware!

James says I’m grumpy…
Tonight we went out to grab a bit to eat. We ran into a man we casually knew ten years ago.
He asked James what he was doing.
James told him he worked with me.
The guy totally ignored me - I was only standing one foot away from James.
He asked James what we did.
I told him we owned [...]

An Ode to Crutches

Over the last few days, I’ve become reacquainted with the power of crutches.
As a result, I’m rethinking my world view on the concept of crutches.

“Crutch” is commonly used in leadership talk in a more negative manner.
A snarky voice criticizing, “He’s using that as a crutch.” (Gasp!)

My new perspective…

With both legs hurting, using crutches takes some weight [...]

Giving Works Both Ways

“Would I ever walk again?” raced through my mind.
I sat on the stage racked with pain and listened to the conference closing for the night. Dessert awaited attendees just outside the room.
My big fall took place (luckily) in front of the leaders of the Oncology Nursing Society.
With the shift to dessert official, several nurses rushed the stage [...]

Friday the 13th Got Me Good

I survived a speaker’s nightmare - just barely.
Friday night, I was the opening keynote for a leadership conference.
The two-hour program had been powerful - and I was bringing it home with my signature closing story.
With less than 30 seconds to go, I raced across the front of the room to emphasize one final point…
Then in a flash it [...]

Fine Does Not Equal Five

It took me over 11 hours to get from my San Diego hotel to the desk of my Pittsburgh hotel.
It was almost midnight. (Eastern Time)
I was tired from the journey; however still on California time so it didn’t feel that late to me.
The desk clerk asked me what time I wanted a wake up call.
I [...]

Singing with Flavor

I got the back stage photo op with the band!
Okay, we weren’t exactly backstage - but I am definitely in the photo with Tonic Sol-fa - one of the five “must see” groups in America!
Tonic Sol-fa is an amazing a cappella group.
The guys sing a tight harmony as well as instrument sounds - you would swear [...]

Sign Me Up for the Tour!

It was Cinderella’s carriage!
On the way to the hotel in San Diego, I saw what looked like Cinderella’s carriage next to us.
I asked the cab driver what was going on.
He explained that some of the drivers now gave tours of the city via the carriage.
I’ve been to San Diego many times. I’ve stayed all over [...]

Saturday Morning Wisdom

Was the message for me?
Walking downtown St. Petersburg, FL on an early Saturday morning, I came across some grafitti on the sidewalk - in the form of poetry.
Several stanzas long, written in colorful chalk, the poem was pretty to look at - without even reading it.
My favorite stanza read…
close the door
carrying only
the one perfect
when you [...]
