Elizabeth Edwards on Younger Involvement

Elizabeth Edwards at BlogHer07Elizabeth Edwards spoke at BlogHer07.

Elizabeth has been active in on-line communities for many years and currently comments on several blogs - including the one that supports her husband’s campaign for US President.

Elizabeth was asked about getting younger adults more involved.

She talked about how when she was in college in the late 1960’s they had the Vietnam War to inspire college kids to come together to raise their voices.

According to Elizabeth, to help increase involvement, young adults need to feel empowered - and feel their voice is heard.

When young people feel like they can’t make a difference or that what they say doesn’t matter - there is less reason to make the effort to be involved.

I was glad to hear Elizabeth stressing the importance of helping younger adults find meaning in being active in their communities and their causes.

(For the record… I too am more likely to commit my time when I feel like the work matters and I am heard.)

Makes me think of chapter leaders… how do you help your members - especially younger members - find their voice in your chapter?
