The Magic Trick vs. The Trees
I walked into the ladies room at the hotel - and discovered a 5-year old boy enthusiastically washing his hands.
His mom was standing near by trying to manage his younger sister.
Upon turning to get help drying his hands, the boy was delighted to discover the automated paper towel machine…
“Shazam!”
With a wave of the boy’s hands, the machine spit out a paper towel.
He giggled with glee and proceeded to command the machine to give him paper towels - over and over…
His mother was frustrated, “Johnny stop that!”
Although her voice kept getting louder, Johnny was having a blast with his newly found magic trick.
Mom was mad, “Johnny, those paper towels are made from trees. When you waste the towels, you cause more trees to be cut down!”
That got Johnny’s attention…
“Do you think they’ll need to cut down the tree where my fort is?”
(Mom finally hit the boy’s hot button.)
Tears bubbled in Johnny’s eyes and he ran out of the bathroom with Mom close behind him.
Made me think of chapter leaders… how do you make sure you connect your volunteering opportunities with the hot button of the person in front of you?
