Why Didn’t You Listen?

Death of a challengeTat-tat-tat-tat-tat…

At first I thought there was a woodpecker in the library.

I listened more carefully.

Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat…

Each word was a stand alone. No inflection, no pause, no nothing. Just words - one meaningless word after another.

Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat…

I rounded the corner and came upon a woman “reading” what looked like a homework assignment to a man.

Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat…

Finally she stopped. She asked the man, “Did you understand what I read you?”

(I wanted to challenge her - how could he?)

Silence was his response.

The tutor continued to drill the man who, like me, had to be hampered by her reading style.

(Neither of us could answer her questions!)

He slumped in frustration as he admitted he had no idea what she was talking about…

It seemed the well-intentioned tutor needed to go back for some basic training in reading herself.

Made me think of chapter leaders… how do you communicate with your members so they hear and understand what you have to say?
