I Gave Up Sleep to Help the Great Lakes
What were you doing at 6:30 AM on this lovely Sunday?
I was on my way to the Douglas J eXchange Ann Arbor to have my hair cut.
Was I crazy?
I wondered. It had been a long week with lots of traveling and I was tired.
But, this weekend was the grand finale effort for Earth Month. Douglas J was working to raise more than $20K for the Alliance for the Great Lakes - and the eXchange was having a 24-hour cut-a-thon.
James and I both grew up in Michigan and love the Great Lakes - so we decided to support the cut-a-thon.
Why did we show up soon after dawn?
It’s graduation weekend for the University of Michigan. Ann Arbor is crawling with events and parents. It seemed easiest to get in and out if we went over early this morning. UGH!
We walked in the eXchange and were greeted by very chipper stylists. I was whisked off by Gina to get my new ‘do. (You can see the creation in process in the photo.)
Gina gave me an amazing head/shoulder massage before working her magic on my hair. The experience AND final look were definitely worth getting up for!
Is Gina my normal stylist?
No. (Don’t tell.)
I’ve been going to the same stylist for a few cuts. He is amazing; however, his schedule and mine do not work well together. I’ve been frustrated in finding time to get my haircut.
Normally, I would have just waited for my regular guy - BUT, this haircut would help the Great Lakes - AND I could check out a potential new stylist…
Made me think about promoting your chapter to potential new members…
There are “normal” routes to finding new members - and creative ones like the Douglas J eXchange cut-a-thon.
Are you doing some community outreach (or other unique programs) that might prompt potential new members to attend - if they know about it?
