Hoop Dancing in the Neighborhood
James and I were looking for a way to make exercising more fun to do together.
I found the answer one day on TV when I saw HoopGirl (who is also known as Christabel) perform.
Christabel has elevated boring, monotonous crunches for building a firm stomach to a new level. She teaches people how to dance in amazing ways using a hula hoop.
I decided to give it a try. I bought a hoop from Hoopshine as well as an instructional DVD - it had been several years since either James or I had touched a hula hoop!
Professional hula hoops are much bigger than what you had as a kid and are decorated in vibrant colors - check out the one James is trying to use!
I attempted to hula once in the house and promptly beamed Raindrop - causing me to be put on probation until spring! ;-)
This week it was finally warm enough to go outside and try it out.
James and I took our snazzy new hula hoop into the front lawn to try out our rusty skills. We have had a blast!
As of right now, neither of us can sustain the hoop spinning for much longer than a minute or two.
However, our antics have become quite the community-building experience.
Neighbors drive by giving thumbs up and others cheer us on as they walk by.
Last night, the kids in the neighborhood grabbed their own hoops to just us how easy it should be - I wanted to send them right back home!
I’m not sure either of us will ever be able to hoop dance like HoopGirl; however, we are having fun trying to keep the hoop from falling on the ground.
We are also doing a ton more crunches than we have ever done - and both go to bed feeling our abs rebel from all the new movement!
If your chapter has grown a bit stale, you may need to find a way to add some hoop-dancing type moves to your members’ experience. What have you done lately to make being involved more fun?
